Next-gen iPod Touch in the works?
It seems an eagle-eyed reader over at iPodTouchFans has spotted something very interesting in the BlueTool initialisation script for the iPhone 3.0 firmware.
A reference to iPod 3.1, given that the current model is iPod 2.1, doesn’t take a giant leap to conclude that it is most likely a reference to a new model. We’re not fully sold though, other similar rumours back in March which, in addition to a 3rd Gen Touch, referred to multiple iPhone models, have so far failed to materialise.
That said, Apple last updated the Touch back in September, so CNet’s prediction for a September 09 release for a new iPod Touch doesn’t seem totally beyond the realm of possibility.
Given the slow uptake of 3.0 by Touch users, a new model is going to have to impress. So, what new features should be included in the 3rd Gen Touch? It’s too early to say for certain but a camera with video recording, Bluetooth and a larger screen are already being mooted as possible inclusions. There must be a concern though that if the new Touch is improved too much, the iPhone and iPod Touch will become indistinct from each other, not something we suspect those who have just paid out for the iPhone 3G S would be too chuffed about. Rumours for this one look set to run and run until Cupertino pipes up.

Ok i’m going to call this one – it will have video functionality but wont encroach on the iPhone’s territory too much feature-wise, it will have an emphasis on speed and storage – so think bigger and faster just like the iPhone 3G S.
Ladies and gents, could it be? The iPod Touch S?
The touch has a very distinct market segment from the phone. I didn’t want the phone, i already have a cell from work (I’d replace it with the iPhone if I could). Why shouldn’t they be basically the same units, one minus the cell capabilities – not everyone wants that.
I really really REALLY dont want a camera on my PMP, what need do i have for it when i have a 5MP one on my phone which is in my other pocket, iphone with a camera (even tho it has no flash and falls far behind other camera phones) makes sense, ipod with camera, doesnt seem all that useful to me personally
Phil- Personally I do not understand why you would want a iPod touch anyhow if you have a iPhone already. Why not just use your iPhone as your iPod too, as it was intended? I am in a very similar situation to Chris above, I want a iPhone but I get a free BlackBerry and service from work, so all I need an iPod touch for is for apps and fun, and yes I would love to have a camera. I fail to see why having an extra option is ever a bad thing unless it shoots the price way up.
