God of War 3 excitement builds: Kratos is back to claim his Playstation crown
With the release of God Of War III only a couple of months away are we going to see another PS3 exclusive game heralded as “only possible on PS3”?
Judging by the previous releases on the Playstation 2 and the prequels on PSP, it seems reasonable to expect the upcoming installment to push its console to the limits.
God of War II, although admittedly one of the later games in the PS2’s
lifecycle, looked like a PS3 game before we’d even seen a PS3 game. Indeed it still outshines the odd PS3 title 5 years after its original release.
However, God Of War III is going to need to be more than pretty to make such an impact again. We’ve already had a HD remake in the God Of War Collection, we don’t need another one.
Unfortunately, this seemed like it might be the case after a slightly underwhelming E3 premiere and the subsequent demo. We’ve already seen a level-sized boss opening the game and Kratos ripping the eye out of a Cyclops’ skull and whilst that’s all very satisfying, we’re hoping the game goes a bit deeper.
Skip forward a few weeks and the buzz started growing surrounding a new demo that had been given a private screening amongst selected gaming press. A game changer, quite literally. Now Kratos isn’t just fighting whatever the Gods have to throw at him, he’s doing it riding the back of the gigantic Titans that were seen scaling Mount Olympus at the end of the last game. As if he didn’t have it hard enough, eh?
The most exciting thing about this is that it isn’t just a graphical flourish; it has a tangible effect on the gameplay. You might think you’re safe battling a few lesser minions until the Titan takes issue with the mess your making on his arm. Suddenly you could be hanging on for dear life as he lifts his arm to his head for closer inspection; turning his limb this way and that as you continue to attack your enemies. This is only what has been shown so far, once we get our hands on the game don’t be surprised to see even more exciting uses of this new environment.
Will we see Kratos scaling the hair on the back of a Titan’s head ala Shadow Of The Colossus or even attacking the titan itself in order to aggravate it into shaking off an enemy? Of course these are some of the tamer options; this is God Of War we’re talking about here. Expect your jaw to constantly drop.
The new setting looks to have added a new element to the hack and slash style game, something that might well and truly push God Of War III into the bracket of “only possible on PS3”.
With new pretenders to the throne like Dante’s Inferno, God Of War undoubtedly feels the need to bring its A-game. Well, it’s not like Kratos to back down from a fight, and it’s hard not to see him and the PS3 coming out on top when it hits the shelves in March.
You can pre-order God of War 3 from Amazon for just £37.73 – if you do you’ll receive an in-game ‘Forgotten Warrior’ character skin free of charge!

Gaming overtime – where did all the hours go?
Sony have already stated that this game is only possible on the PS3 and it’s not hard to see why. This game is going to be outstanding in every department and a strong contender for GOTY. The graphics, the lighting, the sheer scale of this game is above and beyond what any games on a rival console are capable of. I can’t wait for this game to hit the shelves next month!
