New iPhone spurs Google to launch Nexus One before rumoured March release date
We’ve just had a word with a source at Orange UK who told us that Google’s first handset, the Nexus One, may make an appearance before its rumoured March release date…
We’ve seen plenty of leaks about the Nexus One so far; pictures, videos, hands-on impressions – the whole shebang, and then there’s those Google launch event invitations dated January 5th, so we expect to get a full an unabridged introduction to the Nexus One on Tuesday.
Until now we’d been hearing that March was the earliest that the big-G would be releasing
the handset into the wild, but following our conversation with our ‘mole in-the-know’ it now seems Orange is planning to get the handset on the shelves as soon as possible, which when pushed translates to mid-late February.
The reason behind the push is apparently Google’s desire to get its first phone on sale months in advance of a new iPhone announcement, and given the success of Apple’s handsets thus far and the lure of the Apple brand, it’s a legitimate enough concern.
In case you’d missed until now, there’s an overview of the Nexus One’s specs below. We will, of course, keep you updated if we hear any news before the Mountain View launch event on Tuesday next week.
- 3.7-inch WVGA AM-OLED touchscreen display
- 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus
- Qualcomm 1Ghz processor
- Wi-Fi
- A-GPS
- HSDPA/HSUPA (7.2Mbps/upto 5.6Mbps) connectivity
- microSD expansion slot with support for up to 32GB cards
- Android 2.0

The rumored release date was always Jan 5th… you must be thinking of the Bravo
The release date was always rumoured to be the 5th January for direct sales from Google.com/Phone; but we were really referring to the operator subsidised version of the handset, which as it transpires (from the official launch event details yesterday) will not be in the UK until Spring 2010 which is obviously a lot closer to the March release date referred to.
We’re trying to get confirmation from Orange as to when that might be exactly, and will of course let you know in good time, but we can tell you that the Nexus One is not an exclusive to Vodafone, so we’d expect to hear other about operators’ plans really soon.
This is nearly the exact same specs as the HTC Bravo that you have a story about coming to Orange in January. Now does that make any sense to you?
Yeah, it’s pretty much what we were thinking, the phones are remarkably similar
