Twelve Indonesians, including three children, have been killed on the holiday island of Bali after landslides triggered by heavy rain engulfed several villages, an official said yesterday.

Previously national disaster agency reported that landslides occurred in three villages of Songan, Awan and Sukawana in the district on Thursday and Friday, killing 12 people and wounding 5 others.

"We warn people to continue to be vigilant about further disasters", Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told the Jakarta Post.

Red Cross aid workers informed media that the military and police are searching for survivors.

Landslides are common in Indonesia during the monsoon season, but are relatively rare in Bali.

Last December, landslides in Banten and Central Java provinces of western Indonesia have left 5 people dead and 3 others injured, officials said.

Of those injured, at least two were hurt severely, according to the Associated Press, and five homes were buried by the advancing mud. Environmentalists blame the frequent occurrence of landslides on deforestation and poor urban planning.
