Zhang eventually climbed a further wall to enter the tiger enclosure, while his friend stayed back, the statement said.

Once in, he was attacked by a tiger as onlookers watched from a distance.

The visitor was apparently seen climbing into the big cat enclosure at Ningbo Younger Zoo, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, and walking towards the animals as they were feeding. Photos and video shared on social media appear to show Zhang lying on the ground as the tiger circled him, Japanese newspaper Asahi wrote.

After several failed attempts to escape, one tiger drags the blood-soaked man into the woods before ragging him around.

In a rescue effort that reportedly took a more than an hour, park staff used firecrackers and a water cannon to scare off the animals, but the assailant tiger continued his mauling attack by dragging the man away from the crowd.

The attack occurred around 2 p.m.at the Tiger Hill enclosure in Ningbo Youngor Zoo, Xinhua news agency reported.

Zhang was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

They did not identify the man, but said he was middle-aged and that his wife and child were also at the park. The zoo was closed later afternoon on Sunday, with police and forestry bureau arriving 15 minutes later to investigate the incident.

In July a year ago, tigers mauled a woman and her mother when they stepped out of their auto at a Beijing drive-through wildlife park.
