BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER scored on his first start for over a year as Manchester United cruised into the FA Cup fifth round with a 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Jose Mourinho has joined the ranks of discontented Premier League managers.

Midfielder Schweinsteiger was training with the Under-23 side not long ago, but has battled his way back into Mourinho's starting plans.

And Mourinho has confirmed the 32-year-old will be restored to United's squad for their Europa League campaign, having been left out for the group stages of the competition. "Chelsea will play 16 more matches plus some in the FA Cup and we are in this really insane situation".

"For the last 20 minutes, you can forget about really because we're going gung-ho".

"Ninety minutes was probably too hard for him but it was important for him to have an impact with his volley and now I think he's happy".

Mourinho admits he is among those to have favoured staying in the "best competitons" over heading to the Far East, but he also appreciates the appeal of such offers and refuses to criticise anyone faced with a tough career choice. "The only player that is out is De Gea - I'll give him a few days off".

Mourinho explained after his side's impressive triumph over Wigan on Sunday, January 29, 2017 that he would love to keep the 31-year-old English professional footballer.

"We are getting back to a Manchester United way of playing, which I didn't expect so quickly, so I am optimistic for the future".

His experience and enduring quality could prove very valuable in the second half of the season as fixture congestion becomes an issue.

Given that Schweinsteiger is a UEFA Champions League victor, FIFA World Cup victor and eight-time Bundesliga champion he has more than enough experience to help United as they go in search of silverware in the second half of the campaign. They played today in the FA Cup and they have to play on Tuesday in the Premier League.

That Schweinsteiger has stayed at Manchester United owes as much to the inability of the club to find anyone who will match his wages of £200,000 a week as to his professionalism.

"In the second half, I felt we made the most of the space and we were able to score some goals".
