Emmanuelle Riva, Oscar-Nominated Star of 'Amour,' Dies at 89

Emmanuelle Riva, French icon who starred in Amour, dies aged 89

Unfortunately another blow to the Oscars took place in the last 24 hours.

Acclaimed French actress Emmanuelle Riva, who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 2013 for her performance in the film "Amour", died Friday in Paris at 89, THR reports.

She first garnered critical acclaim for her role as Elle in Hiroshima Monday amour (Hiroshima, My Love), the 1959 classic film directed by Alain Resnais and written by Marguerite Duras, for which the latter was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Riva had been battling cancer, her agent, Anne Alvares Correa, told The Associated Press, but was working as recently as last summer, filming a new project, Alma, in Iceland and performing at the Villa Medici in Rome.

"She created intense emotion in all of the roles she embodied", Hollande added.

That's where famed French New Wave pioneer Alain Resnais spotted her, and he quickly cast her in her first leading feature role in "Hiroshima Monday Amour".

As a young girl in France, Riva was initially encouraged by her father to audition for a school theatre productions.

Riva never married and never had children.

Her performances were always perceptive and piercing, with a fiery intelligence burning just under the surface, if not right on top of it, and with a distinctly French brand of beauty and class that often gave way to something darker, more disturbing and ambiguous. She was quickly spotted and cast in the movie "Hiroshima Mon Amour".

In her later years she was more relegated to playing mothers and grandmothers but she never stopped acting.

First coming to prominence with a Bafta win for Best Foreign Actress for Hiroshima Mon Amour in 1959, Riva enjoyed a careering spanning over five decades.
