Boeing hopes Starliner will carry astronauts to new frontier

Astronaut Eric Boe said, "The most important part is that the suit will keep you alive". In fact, Boeing says the suits weigh around 12 lbs (5.4kg)-about 40% lighter than previous suits. If they wore complicated suits with a lot of accessories and systems, they would be more likely to break.

Here's a short clip of astronauts using a simulator for the Boeing Starliner.

This suit can not be worn during spacewalks.

NASA isn't thrilled about having to pay Russia billions of dollars to launch U.S. astronauts on Russian rockets inside of Russian spacesuits.

During the test, Hopkins and Ferguson got into a mockup version of the Starliner spacecraft to test the suit's mobility.

"The spacesuit acts as the emergency backup to the spacecraft's redundant life support systems", Richard Watson, subsystem manager for spacesuits for NASA's Commercial Crew Program said.

In the unlikely event that the Starliner loses pressure, the vents close up, pressurising the suit immediately.

The suits come with touchscreen-friendly gloves and a soft hood-like helmet that easily can be zipped off. The materials used in the elbow and knee pads allow for more flexibility.

The CST-100 Starliner is set to launch in 2018. If the mission goes according to the plan, then nobody needs to wear a spacesuit. But it's not just about looks. SpaceX has not yet unveiled its spacesuit design. It's like having a fire extinguisher close by in the cockpit.

Fernandez is better known for designing costumes for superheroes in films such as "Batman vs. Superman" and "Captain America: Civil War".

A Tested video and a Bleep interview recently revealed the Fernandez is designing a "stylish" and "heroic" alternative to Nasa's Z-2, spacesuit design.

Carrying up to four astronauts at a time for NASA, operational Commercial Crew missions are to take astronauts to the space station on a regular basis permitting the crew on the orbiting laboratory to grow to seven residents.

"I was essentially the model for this as they built the suit around me", said Ferguson, who commanded the final space shuttle mission in 2011 and now serves as Boeing's director of crew and mission systems.

Space fans like us have been waiting a long time to see what private companies have cooked up for getting USA astronauts into space.
