Tamil Nadu's 'Arab Spring' Enters Second Day of Protests

Actor Sivakarthikeyan joined the protesters at Marina today

Panneerselvam was speaking to reporters at the airport prior to his departure to New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press for an ordinance for the conduct of the bull-taming sport.

Honourable CM Thiru.O.Panneerselvam leaves to Delhi to meet PM Modi. Modi assured him of support but pointed out that the matter is sub judice.

As you can see BJP alone has stood by the people of Tamil Nadu and defended their right to celebrate jallikattu.

Advising a way out on similar lines, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi clarified that the SC judgment on Jallikattu did not preclude the State Government from passing a law regulating the sport since "sport" is a State subject under List III of the Constitution.

In July 2009, the government of Tamil Nadu passed the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act (TNRJA).

On January 14 previous year, the Supreme Court passed an interim order banning Jallikattu - a traditional bull-taming sport practised by agrarian communities in the central and south Tamil Nadu districts of Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Theni, Pudukkottai and Dindigul - citing cruelty to the animals.

In a release, she said the party panel of MPs will call on both the President and the Prime Minister.

Earlier in the week, actor Simbu had appealed to protesters to not give up their fight as he gave suggestions to the youth of Tamil Nadu on how to mobilise. Stalin urged Chief Minister O Panneerselvam to immediately convene an all party meeting and subsequently a special session of the Assembly, among other things, to discuss the legal measures to facilitate conduct of Jallikattu.

The Supreme Court in May 2014 banned Jallikattu, saying that bulls can not be used as performing animals for both Jallikattu events and bullock-cart races. Jallikattu, they claim, is not cruel to animals. While all political parties, including the ruling AIADMK has supported the demand for Jallikattu to be allowed again, the protests have not been sponsored by any party. The sport's supporters believe that had the Centre issued an Ordinance instead of a notification in 2016, it would have survived in court.

The ban on Jallikattu has turned into an issue of identity for residents of Tamil Nadu.

Music Composer A.R. Rahman on Thursday tweeted in support and said that he was fasting on Friday in support of the spirit of Tamil Nadu.

Thousands of protestors continued to camp on the city's Marina beach on Thursday.

Extending support to the protesters, Madras High Courts Advocates Association also announced boycott of courts on Friday. Schools and Colleges in Chennai will remain shut on Friday as the civic authorities are anxious over the possibility of the weekend crowd making the beach inaccessible.

In the clip, a policeman talks about the power students hold in Tamil Nadu.

Ramadoss said members of the student and youth wings of the PMK are participating in the ongoing statewide Jallikattu protests.
